Due to Snow, the Regional Science Fair was held over Zoom. The Middle school had 10 projects entered and the high school had 15. It was an interesting time doing 25 zoom presentations of projects! Category winners at the region science fair in the SENIOR DIVISION were 1st place Landon Mudder and Terran Talsma: “How Does Telephone Pole Height and Spacing Affect Pole Strength?” Jasmin Frank and Hayden Talsma : “The Effect of Urea on Seed Germination” 2nd place winners Were Ava Cline “Light Intensity & Angle” Ella Grant “Can you design a better coffee sleeve?” Ella Small and Erica Cahoy “The Effect of Salt Concentration on the Mortality of Water Fleas” Maesa Kuhlman and Kaeli Wallinga “The Effect of UV light on Bacterial Growth” Maddy Huitema and Kindra Mixon “The Effect of Concentration on Visible Detection for Red Food Dye #40” 3RD Place winner: Charli Paulsen “Are LED Lights Brighter Than Incandescent Light Bulbs?” Category winners In the JUNIOR DIVISON were 3rd place winners: Jeanah Ratzlaff “Does the stress of a drought affect the nutritional value of test white corn? Bailey Kemnitz “How does wind speed affect cooling rates?” 2nd Place Winners: Linkin Akridge and Parker Podzimek “Does grain moisture affect the amount of crop lost during harvest?” The students also won 26 specialty awards. Ms. Jurrens and Mr. Kuhlman would like to thank all of the students for their hard work and patience. It was a little disappointing that we could not make the trip to Brookings, but the students adapted very well. In addition, we would like to thank all the teachers at the school for allowing the students to miss their classes for their zoom sessions. Finally, thank you to everyone who helps by volunteering your time, expertise or sending in donations. It is greatly appreciated!

Yesterday some of our students had the opportunity to go to the Bon Homme School and attend a Mini Makers camp put on by Lake Area Tech. Some areas covered were cobots, 3D Printers, soldering, energy systems, machining, autonomous vehicles, and drone making.

The two candidates with the most votes were elected to three-year positions. There were 292 ballots cast out of the 401 official ballots. Congratulations to Lila Vanderlei, Carmindy Ferwerda, Kaeli Wallinga, and Abby Gretschmann who won the 3rd place  team award in the small school division at the USD math contest.  Carmindy and Abby both received Outstanding awards while Kaeli and Lila received a superior. Lila finished second and Kaeli finished 1st in the Algebra II division. Great Job girls and thanks for your dedication to math!
