7th grade started off civics this year by learning about who citizens are and what their duties and responsibilities are to the country. Then, they made a poster to hang in the hallway.

The 5th grade used their STEM time today, completing the marshmallow challenge. Each group had 18 minutes to build the tallest free standing structure that could hold one marshmallow. Supplies were 20 pieces of spaghetti, 1 marshmallow, 1yd of string and 1 yd of masking tape. Great conversations and teamwork were products of our challenge. The winners structure was 19 inches tall! Nice work, fifth graders!!

According to US News and World Report, Avon High School has been ranked as the #18 best HS in the state of South Dakota out of the 115 SD High Schools that made the list. In addition, 7 of the top 20 schools had enrollments under 100 students, which shows the success of our small schools. I am very proud of our students, staff, and community for this ranking and we will continue to work to move up the list. Stay Hungry! See complete rankings below.

We can't thank Apparel Worx, the booster club, Annie, Janelle, and Theresa enough for coming up with such great Pirate apparel each year! I am looking forward to seeing all the new gear on our students, staff, and parents. If you forget to order contact the Booster club. They always maintain a nice selection. Go Pirates!

It definitely was a great day to be a Pirate! This was the 38th first day for me as a teacher, and it never gets old. As I walked around the building, I could feel the enthusiasm of the students and staff. We had great attendance today, and that plays a large part in the success of students in school. Day one is in the books. Be grateful for it, and look forward to tomorrow. Each day is a blessed opportunity to learn something new! First Grade enjoyed some "Jitter" juice to start the day.

Handbook Highlights:
Please note a few changes to the handbook for this upcoming year. As always, they will be highlighted in your handbook that will come home with your student on Wednesday.

Headphones: Wireless headphones will be prohibited. Plug-in headphones will be provided for students in an online class. Students may bring their own plug-in headphones if they choose.

Missing Work
Any student, grades 5-12, who is on the missing work report at the end of the week with 3 or more missing assignments will be checked in with by the administration, counselor, or teacher. If they have three or more assignments still missing, they will be invited into Saturday detention to complete them. Parents will be contacted about their child being invited to come in to complete work.

Eligibility Policy:
If a student participates in only one sport, their eligibility is based on the most recent grading period before the sport begins. For example, fall sports eligibility is determined by the previous spring’s grades. If a student receives an F at the end of the 4th quarter or semester, they are ineligible for the first two weeks of the next school year, even if they make up the credit over the summer. If the student is in a spring sport and fails a class in the 4th quarter, they are ineligible for the rest of that season. They will not be ineligible again in the fall, as they’ve already served their time. Students who do not play a spring sport and fail a class in the 4th quarter will be ineligible for the first two weeks of fall activities.
