The senior government class started this semester by learning about the Political Process: political parties, interest groups, campaign funding, regulations, media, and the election process. The class finished the unit by running their own mock election.  The class was divided randomly into political parties. Each party is represented by a color of their choosing. We do not use names of the real parties, so students listen to the candidates during the debate to see and hear the stances and policies that candidates would enact if they were elected to office.  The parties also used posters, commercials, and in-depth bulletin boards to show their views. Election Day was Tuesday, and Treyvan Tolsma of the Pink Party won with 88 votes, Lance Odens of the Orange Party came in second with 65 votes, and the Teal Party finished third with 64 votes.  We did have three write-in votes this year that pulled votes from the major candidates, which is a good lesson to show that every vote counts.  Those three votes could have changed the outcome of the election.

Avon 3rd graders joined other 3rd graders in celebrating National Third Graders Day on the third day of the third month of the year. The class had a lot of ideas on ways to celebrate. We decided on a field trip to the Community Bank, fun games throughout the day, and a movie encouraging the power of education and knowledge, resilience, and individuality. The 3rd grade enjoyed their day and we would like to say thank you to the Community Bank for teaching us the behind the scenes part of banking.
